Cats

Adopting a cat should not be a snap decision, as it means being responsible for his or her health and happiness for many years. You should never choose to adopt a cat just because the kids have been nagging for one or because you think it’s the right thing to do as there are a lot of things to consider beforehand, not only whether to adopt a kitten or older cat but also the need to factor in things like food and medical expenses etc.

Adopting a Kitten

Most people initially think of adopting a kitten when they decide they want a cat but there are a few things to remember. Kittens are not recommended for households with infants and toddlers. If you have a young child then an older cat may be more suitable. as kittens are often underfoot and easily stepped on, or when chased they may become traumatised.  Kittens usually require extra care and vaccinations and a kitten might answer nature’s call wherever it happens to be so extra time will need to be spent when it comes to training it to use its litter box.

Cost Of Caring For Your Adopted Cat Or Kitten

The cost of a cat is more than just the adoption fee; remember to include the cost of food, litter, veterinary care and toys to keep it occupied when you’re not around, these expenses can add up very quickly.  Although cats are generally easier to take care of than some other pets, such as dogs, they still require daily care,  feeding and exercise, cats also require a litter box which needs to be scooped clean every day.

So before take the step of adopting a cat or kitten make sure everyone in the family is in favour and is prepared to help when it comes to care and feeding and remember too that adopting a cat is a long term commitment. If you’re prepared though you can look forward to many years of wonderful companionship.
